Evaporators are devices used in the removal of solvent as vapour from a solution or slurry. Evaporators are used to concentrate and purify solutions with the goal of limiting the volume of finished products and removing impurities for safer storage and consumption.
Solution is fed into the evaporator and passes the heat source which converts the water in the solution into vapour. The vapour is removed from the solution and is condensed whilst the concentrated solution exists the evaporator. This type of evaporator is known as a single effect evaporator, however if the vapours were reused as the heating medium in another evaporator this system is called a multiple-effect evaporator. Evaporator design consists of three principle elements: heat transfer, vapour -liquid separation and efficient utilization of energy.
Because of this there are various types available including: Falling Film, Rising Film, Forced Circulation, Plate, Tubular and Wiped Film & Thin Film Evaporators. Manufacturers include GEA, Niro, Pfaudler, Luwa, APV and many more.
